Do Google reviews help SEO? How to get more, the right way
More Google reviews come from a habit, not a trick: ask every customer, soon after their visit, with a link that opens the review form in one tap, and reply to every review you get. This guide shows where to find your link and QR code, what to send, how to reply, and the shortcuts that Google and UK law ban.
The benefits of Google reviews for your ranking
Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. Reviews count towards prominence: Google says the number of reviews and the rating are part of how well known it judges a business to be. They matter just as much to people: in the map pack, your stars and review count sit right next to your name, and customers compare them before they choose.
What helps is a steady flow of recent, genuine reviews. Fifty reviews from three years ago say less about you today than a few new ones every month.
Step 1: Get your review link and QR code
Google gives every Business Profile a link that opens the review form directly, and a QR code that does the same. On a computer:
- Go to your Business Profile at business.google.com.
- Choose Read reviews, then Get more reviews.
- Copy the link, or right-click the QR code and save the image.
Google makes the QR code on a computer only, not on a phone. Save both somewhere you can reach them in seconds: your phone's notes, your email signature, your till.
Step 2: Ask every customer at the right moment to generate Google reviews
The best moment is just after the good part: the job is finished, the meal is paid, the treatment went well. Ask everyone in the same way, not only the people you expect to be happy; asking only happy customers is against Google's rules (see below).
| Where | How |
|---|---|
| In person | A friendly line as they leave, and a small card or sign with the QR code. Ask, don't insist: Google bans pressuring people to review while they are still with you. |
| By text or WhatsApp | A short message the same day, with the link. Most reviews are written on a phone. |
| By email | In your thank-you or receipt email, with the link as a button. |
| On paper | The QR code on receipts, invoices, packaging or a table card. |
| On your website | A "Review us on Google" link on your thank-you or contact page. |
Keep the message short and personal. For example:
- "Thanks for coming in today, Sarah! If you have a minute, a Google review helps other people find us: [link]"
- "Your boiler is all fixed. If you were happy with the job, would you mind leaving us a quick review? [link] Thanks, Dan"
Don't tell people what to write, and don't ask them to name a member of staff: Google bans asking for specific content, including naming staff.
What not to do
Google removes reviews that break its rules. Each of these is banned by Google's content policy:
| Don't | Why it is a problem |
|---|---|
| Offer a discount, a gift or a prize draw for a review | Any reward for posting, changing or removing a review is banned |
| Ask only happy customers, or steer unhappy ones away | Google calls this selectively soliciting positive reviews |
| Buy reviews, or swap them with other businesses | Paid reviews are banned "directly or in kind" |
| Have staff, family or friends review you | Reviews from people with a conflict of interest are not allowed |
| Set staff a target number of reviews | Review quotas for staff are banned |
| Ask customers to mention a staff member or use certain words | Asking for specific content is banned |
| Pressure people to review before they leave | Requiring or pressuring a review on the premises is banned |
In the UK, the law has backed this up since 6 April 2025: under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act, writing or commissioning fake reviews, and hiding that a review was incentivised, are banned, and the Competition and Markets Authority can fine businesses up to 10% of their global turnover.
Step 3: Reply to every review
Choose Read reviews on your profile, then Reply next to the review. Your reply appears publicly under the review once Google has checked it, in the name of the business. Google lists replying to reviews among its tips for local ranking, and new customers read the replies too.
- Good reviews: thank them by name and mention something specific. Skip the copy-paste "Thanks for your review!"
- Bad reviews: stay calm and polite, keep their private details private, apologise when it's deserved, and offer to fix it by phone or email. You are writing for the next customer as much as for this one.
- No selling in replies: Google asks you not to use replies to offer deals.
If a review is fake or unfair
You can't delete reviews about your business. If one breaks Google's rules, for example it is spam, off-topic, or written by someone who was never a customer, flag it from your profile and Google will check it. If it is simply negative, reply calmly and factually: a thoughtful reply under a bad review often reassures readers more than another five stars.
Check that it is working
Every month, look at four numbers for you and the three businesses that rank above you most often: how many reviews, how many in the last three months, the star rating, and how many have a reply. If they get more new reviews than you, that gap is often why they stay in the top 3.
Google reviews and SEO questions
How many Google reviews do I need?
There is no magic number. What matters is how you compare with the businesses around you that rank for the same searches, and whether your reviews keep coming. Aim to match or beat your top three rivals on recent reviews.
Can I offer a discount in exchange for a review?
No. Google bans offering anything in return for a review, even for an honest one, and removes reviews it finds were rewarded.
Can I delete a bad Google review?
No. You can flag a review that breaks Google's rules, and you can reply to any review. A calm, helpful reply is usually the best answer to a fair complaint.
Where do I find my Google review link?
In your Business Profile on a computer: Read reviews, then Get more reviews. You can copy the link or download a QR code there.
Does replying to reviews help my ranking?
Google lists replying to reviews among its tips for improving local ranking, and replies show new customers that you care. Reply to every review, good or bad.
