How do I know my SEO is working? A 10-minute local self-check

Local SEO is working when more nearby customers find you on Google and call, visit or book. You do not need an agency report to know whether that is happening. Five questions, answered with your Google profile's own statistics and a free rank check, tell you in about ten minutes. This lesson gives you the five questions, the five numbers to write down each month, and the signs that something is not working yet.

What “local SEO is working” means

Three things happen in order. First your listing becomes easier to match (the right category, complete fields). Then it ranks higher from more spots around you. Then more people see it, and more of them call, ask for directions or visit your website. If only the first has happened, you are not done; if the third is happening, it is working, whatever anyone's ranking tool says.

Google's help page says local ranking depends mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that there is no way to pay for a better position. So “working” never means a trick worked. It means your profile matches more searches, from more places, and more customers act on it.

How to measure local SEO: five questions, ten minutes

  1. Am I in the top 3 at my own address?

Run the free rank check for your main keyword and read “at your door”. If you are not in the top 3 at your own address, nothing else matters yet: your listing itself is the problem, usually the category, the name or missing fields. Go back to lesson 2.

  2. How far does my Google Maps ranking reach?

Same check: count the spots where you are in the top 3. Three of nine is the usual starting point for a shop in town. Working looks like that number rising, month on month, for the same keyword. Lesson 4 explains the numbers.

  3. Are Google Business Profile views going up?

Open your Business Profile and its performance statistics (Google calls them Performance, formerly Insights). “Searches” and “Views” for the last month against the month before. Rising views with flat rankings means the searches themselves grew (seasonal); rising views with rising rankings is your work.

  4. Are calls, direction requests and website clicks going up?

Same page: calls, direction requests, website clicks and messages. These are the numbers that pay the rent. If views rise but actions do not, the profile is found but not convincing: photos, reviews and the description are the next job.

  5. Do people find me for what I sell, not just my name?

Searches that include your business name will always find you. In your profile's performance page, Google lists the search terms that led people to you. Sort them in your head into two piles: your name, and what you sell (“dentist”, “emergency dentist”). Local SEO is working when the second pile grows.

The free scan answers questions 1 and 2: at the door, and how far the green reaches.

Metrics for local SEO: the five numbers in your monthly SEO KPI report

Write these down once a month, for your main keyword, with the date. A notebook or a spreadsheet is enough; the Free plan keeps the first two for you.

NumberWhere it comes fromWorking looks like
Position at your doorRank checkTop 3, every month
Spots in the top 3Rank checkRising, or stable at most of the grid
Profile viewsBusiness Profile performanceRising faster than the season
Actions (calls, directions, website clicks)Business Profile performanceRising with views
Reviews gained this monthYour listingA steady few, all replied to

Average position across the grid is a useful sixth, but the five above are the ones a customer would notice.

Signs your local SEO is not working yet

  1. Green at the door, grey everywhere elseYour listing is fine; your reach is small. Reviews, photos and a few citations build prominence over months.
  2. Grey at the doorThe listing itself fails to match. Check the main category first, then every empty field.
  3. Views up, actions flatPeople find you and choose someone else. Compare your rating, reviews and photos with the three above you.
  4. Everything moves, then falls backA change was undone, or a rival improved. Weekly scans show which week it happened.
  5. Only your name brings peopleNobody finds you for the service. The category, the description and your service list need the words customers use.

How long local SEO takes to work

Fixes to the profile itself (category, hours, missing fields) can change your ranking within days, sometimes within the hour. Reviews, photos and citations build prominence over weeks and months. If you changed the category three weeks ago and nothing moved at your own door, something else is wrong; if you asked for reviews three weeks ago and nothing moved, that is normal, keep going.

Questions about measuring local SEO

How long does local SEO take to work?

Profile fixes can show within days. Reviews, photos and links take weeks to months. Give any change at least four weekly scans before judging it.

Can I measure local SEO without paying for a tool?

Yes. Your Business Profile's performance statistics are free and show views and actions; the free rank check on this site shows your position from 9 spots. Together they answer all five questions.

My ranking went up but calls did not. Is it working?

Half of it. More people see you; they are not choosing you. Look at what the three businesses above you show (rating, reviews, photos, hours) and close the gap.

What is a good number of spots in the top 3?

It depends on the grid and your trade. A shop in town with 3 of 9 is a normal start; most of a 5 × 5 grid green is strong. The direction matters more than the number: the same keyword, the same grid, rising.

Does PinRipple track the profile views and actions too?

Not yet. Those numbers live in your Business Profile and Google does not share them with other tools. PinRipple tracks the ranking side: position, reach, rivals and what to fix.
