# Local business listings and SEO: your Google Maps listing explained

Your Google Maps listing is the card customers see when they tap your business: your name, category, hours, phone, photos, reviews and a map pin. Google builds it from your Google Business Profile, which you edit for free. Eight fields on it do most of the work in rankings, and most small businesses have two or three of them empty or wrong. This lesson names the eight and gives you a two-minute check.

## What a Google Maps listing is, and why business listings matter for SEO

Google has two names for the same thing. The **Business Profile** is what you edit, signed in as the owner. The **listing** is what everyone else sees on Google Maps and in the [Map Pack](https://pinripple.com/learn/what-is-the-google-map-pack). Change the profile and the listing follows, usually within minutes.

Google created a listing for most businesses before the owner ever asked, from directories and public records. That is why unclaimed listings have the wrong hours or an old phone number: nobody has checked them. Claiming and verifying yours is the first step, and Google lists it first in its own ranking advice.

## The 8 Google Business Profile fields that affect your ranking

*A half-empty profile next to a complete one*

The same dentist with a half-empty profile and a complete one. Only the complete one can match “dentist”, “dentist open Saturday” and “dentist near me”.

1. ### Main category: the field that decides what you rank for

The single most important field. It tells Google what you are. “Dentist” matches dentist searches; “Health” matches almost nothing. Pick the most precise category that describes your core business, and add extra ones only for things you really do.

2. ### Business name: as on your sign, no keywords

Your real-world name, as on your sign. Google's guidelines do not allow adding your town or keywords to it (“Bright Smile Dental Leeds Emergency Dentist”), and listings that do can be suspended.

3. ### Address and map pin: on your real entrance

Your real address, with the pin on your entrance. If you travel to customers instead, hide the address and set service areas.

4. ### Opening hours, including special hours for holidays

Google shows “Open now” and “Closed” next to your name. Missing or wrong hours lose the customers who search in the evening, and Google asks you to set special hours before holidays.

5. ### Phone number that reaches this location

A number that reaches this location, not a call centre. On a phone, the Map Pack shows a call button; this is the number it dials.

6. ### Website link: the page that matches your category

Link the page that matches your main category, not necessarily your home page. The page and the profile should agree on your name, address and phone.

7. ### Business description, photos and services list

Up to 750 characters saying what you do, for whom and where, in plain sentences. Real photos of the outside, the inside, the team and the work. Services or products listed by name, with prices where you can.

8. ### Google reviews and your replies

Reviews and ratings count towards how well known Google thinks you are, and customers read them before they call. Ask every customer the same way, and reply to every review.

## Local listing optimization: the two-minute check

Open your listing on Google Maps as a customer would (search your name, not signed in). Go down the eight fields. Each one is either filled in, correct and current, or it is not. Three or more “not” is the usual reason a business sits in fourth place at its own door.

1. **Category** The main category is the most precise one that fits.

2. **Name** Matches the sign on the door, nothing added.

3. **Pin** Sits on your entrance when you zoom in.

4. **Hours** Correct today, and holidays set for the next one coming.

5. **Phone** Rings here, and someone answers in opening hours.

6. **Website** Opens the right page, and that page shows the same name, address and phone.

7. **Description and photos** A description exists; at least ten real photos, one added this month.

8. **Reviews** Every review has a reply, including the bad ones.

## Optimize your Google Maps listing today: fix the first gap

**Fix the first “not”**

Pick the first field on the list that failed and fix it now in your Business Profile; the category and the hours take five minutes each. Then run a [free scan](https://pinripple.com/signin): after each scan PinRipple lists what to fix next, most useful first, and the next scan shows whether it worked. The Free plan gives you 100 credits a month for one business, enough for a 5 × 5 scan every week.

## Google Maps listing questions

Is a Google Maps listing free?

Yes. Creating, claiming and editing a Google Business Profile costs nothing. Only ads are paid, and they are marked as such.

How do I know if my listing is claimed?

Search for your business on Google. If the listing shows “Own this business?” underneath, nobody has claimed it. If you are signed in as the owner, you see an “Edit profile” button instead.

How long do changes take to show?

Most edits appear within minutes. Some, such as a category or name change, may be reviewed by Google first and take a few days.

Which field should I fix first?

The main category, then the hours. They are quick, and they are the two fields that most often stop a listing matching the searches it should.
